PAKISTAN WILLING TO STEP UP RELATIONS

Islamabad is ready to promote bilateral relations on a mutually beneficial basis. The topic has been discussed during the recent visit of an Uzbek delegation to Pakistan.

The Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan, received the Uzbek delegation in Islamabad. The parties discussed the segment that the two sides share interest, namely, agriculture. The focus was agricultural machinery, processing of fruits, cotton, milk and leather. In this connection, issues related to the need for memorandums of mutual cooperation in these sectors which, according to the agreement, will be signed in the nearest future.

The Pakistani Minister informed the Uzbek delegation that about 70% of his country’s GDP is made up of the agricultural sector and involves 45% of the workforce.

The Uzbek side informed the Minister about the annual international exhibitions held in the country on textiles and agriculture, and invited a group of experts to attend them.

During the visit, the head of the Uzbek delegation was received by the Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. During the talks, mutual trade was the major focus. The Prime Minister stressed that our two nations must spare no effort to consolidate cooperation in the economic and commercial spheres, make full use of the existing potential. Nawaz Sharif expressed hope for the possible participation of Uzbekistan in China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). In this regard, he noted the need to develop a joint comprehensive strategy for the use of trade potential in the region.

Islamabad is willing to promote bilateral relations to new heights on the basis of mutual benefit. Nawaz Sharif said that he is impressed by the annual economic growth in Uzbekistan and rich resources that prompted Pakistan to further enhance the relations in the field of economic and energy as well as human resource development.

The Prime Minister urged to facilitate trade, investment and free flow of goods and services between Pakistan and Uzbekistan. He also stressed the relevance of setting up a board of the joint ventures and restoring the work of the joint commission.
