The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Bakhtiyor Saidov met today with the EU Special Representative for Central Asia Eduards Stiprais who is on a visit to our country, reports Dunyo IA correspondent.
"Glad to host H.E. Eduards Stiprais, the EU Special Representative for Central Asia, today at the MFA of Uzbekistan, – the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan wrote in his telegram-channel. – The recent Central Asia — European Union Summit in Samarkand once again underscored the vast potential we have to utilize for the benefit of the people in both regions.
During our meeting, we covered all the aspects of dynamically growing ties — from education to green energy, as well as acute regional and global topics. Underscored mutual commitment to further expand the horizons of cooperation".
The new EU Special Representative for Central Asia is an experienced Latvian diplomat. He has previously served as Latvia’s Permanent Representative to the European Union, as well as Deputy State Secretary – Political Director at the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 2016 to 2020, he headed the Delegation (Embassy) of the European Union in Uzbekistan.
On 1 March 2025, Eduards Stiprais succeeded Terhi Hakala, who had served as the EU Special Representative for Central Asia since 2021 and concluded her mission at the end of 2024.
The main objective of the new EU Special Representative is to advance relations with the countries of Central Asia based on shared values. His mission includes promoting stability and cooperation among the countries of the region, as well as supporting the strengthening of democracy, the rule of law, good governance, and the respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
