A NEW AGREEMENT WITHIN ESCAP

Within the framework of the Ministerial Conference on Transport organized by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the representatives of Russia, China and Mongolia have signed an intergovernmental agreement on road freight transportation along the new Asian transport corridor.

The head of ESCAP Shamshad Akhtar said that the agreement marked a new era in the development of trade cooperation in the region. Under the agreement, each signatory country entitles the other two to carry out international transport operations on its territory located on the Asian highway sections AN 3 and AN 4.

Shamshad Ahtar added that the document would make an important contribution to the economic development in the region and, in particular, Mongolia, which has no outlet to the sea.

In order to demonstrate the advantages of the new initiative, in August 2016 transport ministers from the three countries organized a pilot run of a row of nine trucks, which drove 2,150 kilometers in seven days – from the Chinese Tianjin Port through Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia to Ulan-Ude near Lake Baikal in the Russian Federation.
